The things I read....

Cloth diapering unfriendly to the environment?   UK study shows cloth diapering leaves a larger carbon footprint than disposable diapers.

I think the study fails to take into account using one set of cloth diapers for two or three children, and those of us who dry our diapers in the sun in the spring/summer/fall.

It seems that every few months produces a conflicting study on this issue. Thanks for linking to this one - I hadn't read it yet.

Apparently the original study was very thorough, though, in that it also took in cotton harvesting methods and manufacturing into account for both types. It also figured in that disposable diaper companies are using less pulp and are making diapers that are more and more biodegradable, and that they take up less than 1% of our landfills. And disposable diaper companies use recycled plastics/paper in their packaging. Companies like P&G take some procedes from Pampers sales help fund the National Audubon Society, the Federation of Environmental Management, and the Organic Reclamation & Composting Association... while many cloth diaper fabrics as well as Chinese & Indian prefolds are manufactured in third world companies in factories who operate very "un-green" and employ child labor. So moms who don't choose cloth don't need to take on the guilt trips.

ah, i wasn't meaning to imply that moms who use paper diapers should feel guilty. i hope that you didn't get that impression from my comment. i just think it's interesting how many studies come up with such differing criteria for assessing "environmental impact" and therefore draw such different conclusions.
