Yes, they are mushrooms indeed! They appear to be a mushroom called the "Japanese parasol" mushroom. The scientific name is Coprinus plicatilis if you have a mushroom guide such as the Audubon guide. They are very delicate and do dry up and disappear when the sun shines on them.
